There’s something special about early mornings on the water—the kind where the air is crisp, the sky hangs low with clouds, and the world feels like it’s just beginning to wake up. That’s exactly how it felt when the Golf and Game crew set out for the annual walleye run on the Detroit River.
This trip brought together one of Golf and Game Apparel’s founders, Nate, along with John and Warren. The plan was simple: get out early, find the fish, and make the most of one of the best times of year on the river.
As we launched before sunrise, it quickly became clear we weren’t the only ones with that idea. Boats lined the water in every direction—seriously, as far as the eye could see. It’s a scene that never gets old. Hundreds of anglers, all chasing the same bite, all part of the same seasonal rhythm.
We made our way toward the Canadian side of Boblo Island, a go-to stretch during the run. The conditions couldn’t have been better—cool, cloudy skies and just enough movement in the water to keep things interesting. Perfect walleye weather.
Lines went in, jigs dropped, and it didn’t take long before the first fish hit. That unmistakable tap—quick, sharp, and just enough to get the adrenaline going. From there, it was steady action. One after another, we dialed in the pattern and stayed on them.
There’s a rhythm to jigging for walleye. It’s focused but relaxed, technical but instinctive. And when you’re dialed in with your crew, it becomes something more—it’s shared experience, quiet competition, and a lot of laughs in between.
About three hours in, we had done what we came to do—we hit our limit.
Mission accomplished.
But like most days out on the water, it wasn’t just about the fish. It was about being out there together, surrounded by a community of anglers, doing something that feels timeless. It’s those moments—off the course, off the grid—that define what Golf and Game Apparel is all about.
Because whether it’s a round of golf or a morning chasing walleye, the game doesn’t stop when you leave the course.
